If you’re over 50 and artificial intelligence seems to be moving ridiculously fast, I want you to remember something.

You’ve been here before.

Maybe not with artificial intelligence.

But you’ve lived through more technological change than you probably give yourself credit for.

Think about your life before the internet.

Think about how you communicated.

How you found directions.

How you bought things.

How you paid bills.

How you looked up a phone number.

How you researched something.

How you watched television.

How you took photographs.

How you listened to music.

How you applied for a job.

How you planned a vacation.

How you stayed in touch with someone across the country.

Then compare it with today.

That’s an unbelievable amount of technological change in one lifetime.

And now we’re being told artificial intelligence is going to change everything again.

Maybe it will.

But before declaring ourselves obsolete, perhaps we should remember that we’ve already survived several versions of “everything is changing.”

Remember Life Before Google?

Suppose it was 1988 and you wanted to find a local plumber.

You grabbed the Yellow Pages.

If you wanted to learn about something, maybe you went to the library.

If you needed directions, you used a paper map.

If you missed your favorite television show, that was generally your problem.

If somebody called while you weren’t home, they called back.

Eventually answering machines solved that catastrophe.

Research involved actual effort.

Information moved slowly.

Then computers entered homes and workplaces.

Computers Were Supposed to Make Everything Easier

Anyone who lived through the early personal-computer era can appreciate how optimistic that promise was.

Computers did eventually make many things easier.

They also gave us:

  • software crashes
  • printer drivers
  • passwords
  • viruses
  • lost files
  • updates
  • error messages
  • mysterious frozen screens

Every technology solves problems while enthusiastically introducing new ones.

Artificial intelligence will probably continue this proud human tradition.

Then Came the Internet

The internet was another enormous shift.

At first, many people weren’t sure what they were supposed to do with it.

Why would an ordinary person need to be “online”?

Why send electronic mail when you could use the telephone?

Why buy something through a computer?

Why would businesses need websites?

Those questions weren’t necessarily stupid at the time.

Technologies become obvious in hindsight.

They rarely feel obvious while they’re arriving.

Gradually, the internet moved from novelty to infrastructure.

Email became normal.

Search engines became normal.

Shopping online became normal.

Online banking became normal.

Streaming became normal.

Remote work became normal enough that millions of people suddenly depended on it during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pew Research found that substantial shares of adults over 50 said the pandemic changed how they use technology, including 42% of people ages 50 to 64 and 36% of those 65 and older. (Pew Research Center)

People adapted because circumstances made technology useful.

That’s worth remembering as AI develops.

The Smartphone Was Another Revolution

Then we took the internet and put it in everybody’s pocket.

Think about how strange today’s smartphone would have looked 30 years ago.

One device contains:

  • a telephone
  • camera
  • video camera
  • GPS
  • calculator
  • alarm clock
  • calendar
  • music player
  • television
  • newspaper
  • maps
  • banking
  • shopping
  • weather
  • email
  • text messaging
  • video calls
  • games
  • an entire encyclopedia’s worth of information

And somewhere along the way, we stopped thinking of this as extraordinary.

It became a phone.

That’s what happens with successful technology.

Eventually the technology disappears and the function becomes normal.

Older Adults Did Not Get Left Behind

The stereotype of older people refusing technology doesn’t hold up particularly well when you look at today’s numbers.

Pew’s 2025 data showed smartphone ownership at 90% among Americans ages 50 to 64 and 78% among those 65 and older. (Pew Research Center)

So let’s dispense with the idea that everyone over 50 is sitting beside a rotary phone waiting for a telegram.

We’re already using sophisticated technology.

We just don’t necessarily describe ourselves as technology users.

AI Feels Different

Artificial intelligence does feel different from many previous technologies.

The reason is simple.

You communicate with it.

Traditional software waits for you to press the correct button.

Generative AI lets you explain what you want in ordinary language.

You might say:

“Help me plan a five-day trip to Maine.”

Or:

“Explain this retirement document.”

Or:

“Help me organize my garage.”

Or:

“Give me five questions to ask before buying this computer.”

The software responds conversationally.

That’s powerful.

It’s also weird.

Don’t Mistake Conversation for Consciousness

Because AI talks naturally, people can start assigning human characteristics to it.

We say:

“AI thinks.”

“AI knows.”

“AI wants.”

Sometimes that’s convenient shorthand.

But AI isn’t your neighbor.

It isn’t a coworker sitting inside your phone.

It doesn’t become your buddy because it remembers the kind of music you like.

It is software generating responses.

Keeping that distinction clear helps prevent both excessive fear and excessive trust.

AI Isn’t Magic

The words “artificial intelligence” don’t help.

They make the technology sound like something from a science-fiction movie.

For an ordinary user, though, a lot of practical AI is much less dramatic.

You’re using software to help:

  • write
  • summarize
  • brainstorm
  • research
  • classify
  • organize
  • compare
  • explain
  • plan

We’ve used computers for versions of these tasks for decades.

Generative AI makes interacting with the computer considerably easier because you can describe what you need.

That’s the breakthrough most ordinary users should care about.

You Don’t Need to Learn Everything

Think about your smartphone.

Do you know every feature?

I don’t.

Does anybody?

Probably somebody on YouTube, and apparently he has made 73 videos about it.

Most people learn enough to accomplish what matters to them.

You might use your phone constantly for:

  • texting
  • email
  • maps
  • photos
  • podcasts
  • weather

and never touch 80% of its capabilities.

That’s fine.

AI should be treated the same way.

Don’t Become an AI Tool Collector

This is one of the traps I see people fall into.

They discover AI.

Then they start collecting AI apps.

ChatGPT.

Claude.

Gemini.

Perplexity.

An image generator.

An AI note app.

An AI writing platform.

A video tool.

An automation service.

Six browser extensions.

Three subscriptions they forgot they signed up for.

Suddenly AI is making their life more complicated.

That’s backwards.

AI is supposed to remove friction.

If your AI system requires an organizational chart, something went wrong.

Pick one tool.

Learn it.

Use it to solve a real problem.

Then expand if necessary.

Start With Something Boring

This may not make for exciting YouTube thumbnails, but some of AI’s best uses are boring.

Boring is good.

Boring is where time gets wasted.

Try asking AI to:

  • organize meeting notes
  • create a grocery list
  • summarize a document
  • rewrite a confusing paragraph
  • compare two products
  • plan errands efficiently
  • draft questions for a meeting
  • create a checklist
  • help organize a home project

If it saves you 20 minutes, that’s a win.

It doesn’t need to revolutionize your existence.

Practical Use Is What Many Adults 50+ Want

AARP research suggests older adults are especially interested in AI when it improves practical tasks, simplifies information, or makes existing experiences easier.

The same research finds less enthusiasm for some applications that involve replacing human roles. (AARP)

That’s not technological ignorance.

It’s judgment about where technology belongs.

I think AI companies would be wise to listen.

People don’t necessarily want an AI toothbrush connected to an AI refrigerator telling an AI toaster how emotionally fulfilled breakfast was.

Sometimes they want help understanding a bill.

AI Adoption Is Already Happening

AARP reports that generative AI use among adults over 50 increased significantly between 2023 and 2025.

Its 2026 technology research summary places usage at 30% in 2025, up from 18% in 2024 and 9% in 2023. (AARP)

Another AARP study found that familiarity and use vary by age within the 50+ population. Nearly half of surveyed respondents in their 50s reported knowing about and using AI or AI-driven chatbots, while the figure was lower among adults over 70. (AARP)

This is exactly what you would expect during a technology transition.

Different people adopt at different speeds.

Remember Online Banking?

There was a time when putting financial information into a website sounded insane.

People were understandably worried.

Could somebody steal my money?

Could the site be hacked?

Could someone get my password?

Those concerns weren’t imaginary.

Cybercrime is real.

The answer wasn’t to ban online banking from our lives.

We developed better systems and better habits.

Encryption.

Two-factor authentication.

Fraud monitoring.

Secure passwords.

Consumer education.

We learned how to use the technology more safely.

AI will require the same mindset.

Don’t Choose Between Hype and Fear

AI conversations tend to collapse into two camps.

One says:

“AI is going to solve everything.”

The other says:

“AI is going to destroy everything.”

Those positions have something in common.

They’re both extremely dramatic.

Reality is usually more complicated.

AI is already useful.

AI also creates real problems.

Generative AI systems can produce false information.

NIST specifically identifies “confabulation” as a risk, meaning AI can generate erroneous material and present it confidently. (NIST Publications)

AI can also be misused.

Scammers can employ AI-generated voices, images, and text.

The FTC has warned consumers about AI voice-cloning scams designed to impersonate family members or others. (Consumer Advice)

Those are legitimate concerns.

The answer is education.

You Survived Email Scams Too

Remember those emails announcing you’d inherited $27 million?

They were easier to spot.

Modern scams can be much more sophisticated.

Now an email can be beautifully written.

A fake photograph can look convincing.

A cloned voice can sound familiar.

That’s why learning about AI isn’t merely about productivity.

It’s increasingly part of digital literacy.

Understanding what AI can do helps you understand what other people can do with AI.

That is a powerful reason for older adults to learn about this technology even if they never become heavy users.

Develop a Verification Habit

When something seems suspicious:

Stop.

Don’t click immediately.

Don’t send money.

Don’t provide information.

Verify through another channel.

If your “son” calls asking for emergency money, call him back using the number already saved in your phone.

If your bank emails about an emergency, open the bank’s app independently or call the number you know.

If your employer supposedly asks for an unusual payment, verify it.

We can’t rely solely on something looking or sounding legitimate anymore.

What AI Can’t Replace

There’s another reason I think people over 50 should approach AI with confidence.

AI doesn’t erase your experience.

If you’ve spent 20, 30, or 40 years learning a profession, dealing with people, raising a family, managing problems, developing hobbies, building relationships, and making mistakes, that knowledge matters.

AI can help you use it.

Imagine two people using AI.

One has no experience with the subject.

The other has 30 years of experience.

They receive the same AI-generated suggestion.

The experienced person might immediately say:

“That would never work because…”

That’s judgment.

AI gives you speed.

Experience gives you context.

Put them together.

Your Second Act Might Include AI

For people in their 50s especially, this could become interesting professionally.

You may have many working years ahead.

AI could help you:

  • learn a new skill
  • prepare for interviews
  • research career paths
  • improve your resume
  • start a side business
  • create content
  • package existing expertise
  • prepare presentations
  • organize projects
  • increase productivity

The goal doesn’t need to be replacing your existing expertise with AI expertise.

It may be adding AI to what you already know.

That’s much more powerful.

Imagine the Accountant Who Learns AI

Who’s more useful?

Someone who knows AI but knows nothing about accounting?

Or an experienced accountant who understands exactly where AI can help in an accounting workflow?

What about:

  • an experienced teacher using AI
  • a salesperson using AI
  • a nurse learning AI tools
  • a warehouse manager using AI
  • a real estate professional using AI
  • a podcaster using AI
  • a small-business owner using AI

Domain knowledge plus AI can be much more valuable than generic AI knowledge.

This Is Why Being 50+ Can Be an Advantage

We’ve spent years learning how things work.

Now we have a tool that can help us access, organize, and apply information more quickly.

That’s an opportunity.

You don’t need to throw away everything you learned.

You combine it.

Seven Days to Stop Being Intimidated by AI

Here’s an experiment.

Don’t take an AI course.

Don’t subscribe to ten platforms.

Give yourself seven days.

Day 1:Ask Something You’re Curious About

Pick something you already care about.

Gardening.

Fishing.

History.

Cars.

Cooking.

Travel.

Photography.

Ask questions.

Notice how the conversation works.

Day 2:Have AI Explain Something

Find something confusing.

Ask:

“Explain this in plain English without removing important details.”

Then ask follow-up questions.

Day 3:Use AI for a Small Writing Task

Write a rough email.

Ask AI to improve clarity while keeping your voice.

Compare the versions.

Day 4:Compare Something

Give AI two products or options.

Ask for:

  • similarities
  • differences
  • trade-offs
  • questions you should research

Day 5:Let AI Plan Something

Try a:

  • meal plan
  • day trip
  • weekend project
  • learning plan
  • shopping list

Day 6:Catch AI Being Wrong

Ask about something you know well.

This is a surprisingly valuable exercise.

See where AI misses nuance.

Challenge it.

Correct it.

Watch what happens.

You’ll quickly understand why human expertise still matters.

Day 7:Decide What’s Worth Keeping

Ask yourself:

  • What saved time?
  • What was annoying?
  • What was useful?
  • What would I never use again?
  • What should I learn next?

Now you have an AI strategy based on your life.

Not someone else’s.

Use AI Without Losing Yourself

This matters to me.

I don’t want artificial intelligence to turn everybody into the same person.

I don’t want AI writing every thought we have.

I don’t want people handing over their judgment because software can produce something faster.

If you create something, keep your voice.

If you’re making a decision, keep your judgment.

If you’re researching, verify.

If the AI disagrees with you, consider why.

If you disagree with AI, that’s allowed too.

AI is a tool.

You’re still the person using it.

Technology Should Serve People

We’ve sometimes gotten this backwards.

We act like people need to adjust their entire lives to whatever Silicon Valley releases next.

No.

The technology should prove its value to you.

Ask:

Does this make something better?

Does it save meaningful time?

Does it improve my understanding?

Does it help me accomplish something I care about?

If not, don’t use it.

Nobody gets a medal for having the most AI apps.

What Happens Next?

Artificial intelligence will continue changing.

Some current companies will probably disappear.

New ones will emerge.

Today’s incredible AI capability may look primitive in a few years.

That’s happened before.

Remember early websites.

Early digital cameras.

Early smartphones.

Early GPS.

Technology improves.

But the basic strategy remains the same.

Pay attention.

Experiment.

Learn what matters.

Ignore some of the noise.

Protect yourself.

Keep your judgment.

You Don’t Have to Choose Today

If you’re skeptical about artificial intelligence, that’s fine.

Learn enough to understand what you’re skeptical about.

Try a few things.

You may decide certain AI applications are useful.

You may decide others aren’t.

That’s a rational approach.

The goal shouldn’t be turning every person over 50 into an AI fanatic.

We have enough fanatics.

The goal is giving people enough knowledge to make their own decisions.

We’ve Done This Before

Think about everything you’ve adapted to.

Computers.

ATMs.

Email.

Internet.

Cellphones.

Smartphones.

Digital cameras.

GPS.

Online shopping.

Online banking.

Streaming.

Video calls.

Cloud storage.

Social media.

Apps.

Remote work.

Artificial intelligence is the newest chapter.

It won’t be identical to previous technology transitions.

It has unique benefits.

It has unique risks.

It may have much broader consequences.

But you’re not arriving without experience.

You’ve lived through technological change before.

You’ve watched technologies get hyped.

You’ve watched others disappear.

You’ve watched strange things become normal.

That perspective is valuable.

The Point Isn’t to Survive AI

Maybe “survive” is even the wrong word.

The better goal is to understand AI well enough to make it useful when it deserves to be useful.

You don’t have to love artificial intelligence.

You don’t have to hate it.

You don’t have to follow every announcement.

You don’t have to become a programmer.

You don’t have to surrender your judgment.

You just need enough understanding to make your own decisions.

And if you’re sitting there thinking:

“I’m 50, 60, or 70. I missed this.”

No.

You didn’t.

You’re here right as millions of other people are figuring it out too.

Start with one question.

Try one useful task.

Learn one thing.

Then another.

That’s how most of us learned computers.

That’s how we learned the internet.

That’s how we learned smartphones.

And somehow, despite all available evidence regarding humanity’s relationship with printer settings, we eventually figured those things out.

We’ll figure this out too.
